The 5 AM Club

Promote Creativity, energy & productivity through solitude & brain state

The solitude and enhanced brain state experienced by getting up at 5 am will help you perform like the elite. It helps you to escape mediocrity and achieve greatness.

Promote creativity, double energy & triple productivity.

We have limited cognitive bandwidth. This gets used up throughout the day. Thereby by lunchtime we use up most of our bandwidth. Getting up at 5am allows focus on one high-value adding activity.

Transient Hypo frontality

  • your prefrontal cortex (handles rational thought) temporarily shuts down
  • reduced tendency to analyze, stress/worry is impaired
  • the peace of daybreak stimulates neurotransmitter Dopamine & Serotonin
    • ENTER A STATE OF FLOW

To get the results of the top 5% you have to do what 95% of people aren’t willing to do!

The 5 Rules for Results

  1. An addiction to distraction is the end of your creative production. Empire-makers and history-creators take one hour for themselves before dawn, in the serenity that lies beyond the clutches of complexity, to prepare themselves for a world-class day.
  2. Excuses breed no genius. Just because you haven’t installed the early-rising habit before doesn’t mean you can’t do it now. Release your rationalizations and remember that small daily improvements, when done consistently over time, lead to stunning results.
  3. All change is hard at first, messy in the middle and gorgeous at the end. Everything you now find easy you first found difficult. With consistent practice, getting up with the sun will become your new normal. And automatic.
  4. To have the results The Top 5% of producers have, you must start doing what 95% of people are unwilling to do. As you start to live like this, the majority will call you crazy. Remember that being labeled a freak is the price of greatness.
  5. When you feel like surrendering, continue. Triumph loves the relentless.

The Four Focuses of great History Makers:

  1. Capitalisation IQ: The greatest people are defined not by their natural talents but by the extent to which they capitalise on them. Self-Discipline and perseverance always trump talent & giftedness. Rather than thinking you don’t have what it takes, capitalize on the gifts you’ve got to make a difference.
  2. Freedom from distraction is key! Too much time is wasted on hollow technology and social media. TO win, Focus Simplify and concentrate. Concentrate on a few amazing work projects rather than many good ones! Strip out everything in your day to day that distracts you from a relentless focus on what’s most important to you.
  3. Understand the power of day stacking – getting small things done daily is more important than getting big things done once in a while. Enhance one skill or ability by 1% every day (365% in a year).
  4. Personal mastery practice makes History makers! In order to master yourself spend the first hour of every day working deeply on you, your mindset, health spirituality and love.

The 4 Interior Empires

  1. Minset: psychology
  2. Heartset: Emotionality – “unexpressed emotions will never die. They are buried alive and they will come forth later in uglier ways” (Sigmund Freud)
  3. Healthset: Physical Health – optimal fitness, ignite your energy, dissolve stress and expand your joy with exercise.
  4. Soulset: Spirituality – pull away from everyday superficiality and materialism. Use the quiet of the morning to remember who you are. Bond with the hero inside you! Meditate on what you have to offer the world

The Twin Cycle of Elite Performance

To protect the 5 Assets of Genius one must alternate between two cycles:

image
  1. The High Excellence Cycle (HCE)
  2. The Deep Refuelling Cycle (DRF)

Therefore, how you spend your last hour of your day is almost as important to peak performance as how you spend your first. Avoid blue light and have a wind down routine & go to bed no later than 10 pm.

Sleep and daytime performance is your Long term performance cycle. However, in the shorter term and during the day you should also oscillate between passionate, focused work at the highest levels and periods of time for deep refuelling through relaxations, recovery and fun.

Growth happens in the recovery phase as a result of the performance phase. Making both equally important.

Embrace rest, relaxation and fun, safe in the knowledge that it’s a key part of elite performance.

Tactics of Life-Long Genius

The Tight Bubble of Total Focus

An addiction to distraction is the death of your creative production. Each morning, you enter this invisible bubble of your own making that is completely empty of other people’s superficial messages, spam, fake news, advertisements, silly videos, irrelevant chatting and other forms of cyber-hooking that will destroy your life of monumental potential.

The 90/90/1 Rule

For the next 90 days dedicate the first 90 minutes of your workday to the one best opportunity in your life. Nothing Else. Zero distractions. Just get that project done period.

  • Your business idea
  • Your promotion assignment

Doing real work rather than artificial work, daily and with absolute consistency will give you a Gargantuan Competitive advantage – born of mastery.

The 60/10 Method

Work for 60 Minutes and refuel for 10. Go for a walk, listen to some music, read something entertaining. Use a timer.

The daily 5 Concept

Set yourself 5 high value targets for each day and achieve them

The 2nd Wind Workout (2WW)

Workout after work to set yourself up for a relaxing evening – go for a 60 minute walk, a mountain bike ride or a swim.

The 30 second habit

Take 30 Seconds after each meeting to write down the most important points for retention.

The Weekly Design System (WDS)

The Focus on the worthy program – take one hour on Sundays to complete this.

The 8 Steps of the Weekly Design System: -

Step 1 - Connect with your compelling cause - ask yourself 3 questions

  1. What would you want your life to stand for?
  2. How do you want to be remembered?
  3. What is your compelling cause? (A paragraph that states your ultimate purpose and burning desire that guides you)

Step 2 - Weekly Story - Here you write out day by day (7 days) from week prior and how you lived it. Writing clarifies our 'fuzzy thinking' so I have found this process most cathartic and enjoyable. An incredibly powerful practice that allows you to learn from life and lets your past serve you

An incredibly powerful practice that allows you to learn from life and lets your past serveyou

Step 3 - Celebration - Here you right out 6 Truly Exceptions (3 Personal and 3 Professional) from your previous week you did well and you're proud of (could be waking up 5 days in a row early, got to work 1 hour ahead of time each day) things that give you momentum and energy. Making time to record your wins fosters an extraordinary degree of momentum in your life which allows you to fuel your upward rise to success.

Step 4 - Weekly Rating - Now that you've reviewed your week, give it a weekly rating out of 10 (10 being the best), I haven't had a 10 week yet...it's one my list of goals though :) As Peter Drucker once said, "What is not measured cannot be improved". Also, in addition to this quantified score, measure qualitatively the level of success and/or satisfaction you have about the week that passed. You can also reflect what you feel will allow you to transcend to a higher rating and level.

"What is not measured cannot be improved" Peter Drucker

Step 5 - Inspired Standards - Now's the time to set your stretch goals for the week. Your BHAG's (Big Hairy Audacious Goals) 6-8 in total (3-4 Personal and Professional) that you can focus on to bring this week to its highest level. By setting these intentions, you bring a sense of excitement to your days as well as focus. Good to remember, the human brain craves fun and novelty and the need to feel actualised and fulfilled. Despite what it feels like in the moment, we are most happiest when we are growing and challenging yourself to get better.

Step 6 - Living your Priorities - Here, you write out a list (only once) at the start of the year of the activities want to schedule into your weeks. Eg. (Running in the morning, walking the dog, time with the kids, early rising). Everything you feel you'd need for the week ahead take out of this list and get ready to schedule in.

Step 7 - Integration - We now take the priorities for the week and schedule them into your schedule. Best to put into both your Smartphone calendar and also (if you can) write out as well. The very act of writing, and putting pen to paper, deepens your conviction and will to make these happen. The process of building out your ideal week also brings with it an added sense of excitement and hopefulness about the coming 7 days.

Step 8 - Execution - Every morning, take about 10 minutes to revisit your blueprint you created in step 7 and re-dedicate yourself to making this blueprint come to life!

I hope you find value in these 8 steps as I did when they found me (only when I was ready). As the old adage goes...
